As cats age, their naps get longer, deeper, and more frequent. In fact, 16–20 hours of daily sleep is totally normal for senior kitties - especially our laid-back Maine Coons.
But if your older cat suddenly starts sleeping more than usual or in different spots, it could signal something else.
🐾 Some signs to watch:
– Skipping favorite nap spots
– Sleeping through things they usually perk up for
– Hiding more than usual
– Changes in posture or sleep position (a sign of arthritis)
A 2023 study even found that cats over 11 had more daytime sleep, but fragmented nights - much like aging humans. So if your Coonie naps all afternoon but roams or vocalizes at night, there may be a deeper reason.
Heated beds, easy-access perches, and more frequent vet visits (twice yearly is ideal after age 10) can go a long way in keeping older cats comfortable.
Wishing you and your dozing darling a cozy day!
